A job interview can be a nerve wrecking experience. It can also be an encounter that can change your life for better or for worse. Being yourself under that level of pressure and letting your best side show when all eyes are on you is something that requires more than just luck. You need to prepare for your job interview – regardless of how good your resume is. Most applicants make the critical mistake of relying on a good resume to land them a job. Not true. A resume will get you the interview. Your performance during the interview will get you the job.

Qualifications and experience will only take you that far. You need to “be there” in your interview and show your prospective employer why you are the one for the job. So, what can you prepare and how do your prepare? Here are a few basic tips.

1. Who are you?

Most interviews will start with an introduction. You will be asked something along the lines of “tell us a little more about yourself…” You can prepare for this and since you know that it will be asked you can design your response to say something meaningful about yourself. This question is more than just an ice-breaker. Its designed to give them an idea of what you are all about.

2. Why did you leave your previous job?

This is another question that most interviewees stumble over. It can be a delicate question and so many people make the mistake of bad mouthing their previous employer. Never do that. Think long and hard about how you will answer this and make sure that you answer is never directed at criticizing your previous job. It never comes across well in an interview.

3. Why do you think they should hire you?

What can you bring to this company? Always remember that your prospective employer’s main interest is in what you can bring to them and what you can offer. It can be a difficult question but if you prepare it well and come up with an answer that translates your skills into practical uses within the firm then the job is as good as yours.

In the end confidence is all important during your job interview. Being well prepared is an important step towards feeling confident and having some idea of how you will answer difficult questions. Being calm and relaxed goes a long way and will help you to be yourself and impress your future employer.

Most people are very nervous about job interviews, and it’s natural to feel that way. After all, you’re in the hot seat, answering pointed questions about yourself and your history while trying to make yourself attractive to your potential employer. With some preparation and know-how about what common, major mistakes to avoid, you can set aside those interview fears and handle the meeting with confidence.


The first mistake is showing a noted lack of confidence in both yourself and your abilities. Whether you think you’re showing it or not, your interviewer will be able to sense your lack of confidence like a vulture catching the scent of an impending death, and your interviewer will be unlikely to trust in the abilities of someone who doesn’t appear to trust themselves.


You should be honest about your capacities but play up your talent in what you can do when speaking to your interviewer. Don’t worry about rubbing your potential employer the wrong way by seeming arrogant. As long as you don’t act like a prima donna, take the potential job seriously, and avoid demeaning your interviewer or their organization, you should come off as self-confidant, rather than a pompous ass.


Many people want temporary work or aren’t sure if they’ll be with the company for a long time. Whether you’re looking for long-term employment or something shorter, always try to leave your interviewer with the impression that they won’t have to go through the hiring process again anytime soon. At the same time, be honest about your intentions if the question comes up and have your explanations and reasons handy.


Employers look for staff that are reliable and those who tend to bounce from job to job aren’t going to have good chances of being hired. Also, if your work history shows that you’ve changed jobs frequently, be prepared to answer why and make sure those reasons are solid.


Preparation for a job interview is another must that people often overlook. Don’t even try thinking you can wing it without at least some level of planning. If your resume has less than flattering facts or history on it, you’ll want to prepare for the interviewer to discover those facts and discussion about them.


A little research into the organization you’re trying to work for (as well as researching the person interviewing you) can go a long way. Further, a pre-written list of questions about the position for your interviewer to answer will make you seem smart and savvy, both qualities interviewers want to see in an applicant.


As you can see, sweating out a job interview isn’t the way to land yourself that dream job. Grab hold of your self-confidence and the knowledge you’ve got the skills your employer is looking for and land that job opportunity with pride the pride you have in your talents.

Both actual job employment interviews and the whole interview process can be both an intimidating and frustrating affair. First the initial interview, then a second interview, if you are lucky enough to be called back. The second interview can be an group of people from within the organization, the same interviewer as the first time , or another trusted senior member or the firm either from that location or : “head office”. Lastly is the third and more senior interview. If you get to the third interview step – that is a good sign that the firm is seriously interested in you or your talents.

The dilemma with the job interview process is always the same. You want the job – that is why you are there. It’s not for your health as they say. If you do not answer questions in either the way the answer is wished or required you may not get the job. The question always is “Do you play the game” or “Do you tell the truth”. It is a tough call.

On top of that there are a number of questions that employers may ask that if not none of their business are certainly not in good taste and indeed may be illegal. Again it is your choice on how to these questions if indeed to answer them as well. If you are prepared yourself, ahead of the interview session, have thought of your personal boundaries and potential answers or non answers you be in a terribly preferable situation than otherwise.

You may be asked such personal questions such as – Are you married or single? , Do you have any children? , Have you ever been divorced? You can choose to answer or not.

However be aware that according general legislation concerning employment and hiring status, it is not allowed to discriminate on hiring and employment on the basis of marital status or non marital status. Indeed some employers have even asked such personal questions to a woman as “Do you plan to get pregnant?” Again the same rules apply.

Similarly it is against hiring and employment legislation to discriminate against an employee on the basis of race, religion and country of origin. This may include such innocuous side questions to reveal this information as “Where were you born” or “What is your native language?” Remember that first and foremost you are there to get the job, not be interrogated. If you are an American citizen you are first a foremost an American. It does not matter where you were born. If you are a temporary resident or in the process of applying for American citizenship all that matters in the end is if you have documentation that authorizes you to work I the United Sates. Interestingly some interviewers may make personal comments on religious holidays and observances to watch your reaction.

Your reaction to such a test may well be that this is not a wise place or environment to work in. Better to look for a job elsewhere down the road or internet connection.

In the same manner similar questions may be asked about alcohol and tobacco use. It must be remembered that both of these products are legal products and are not illegal.

True there may be concerns about the use of these products on the premises or on the job. However off the job or the firm’s premises is an entirely different matter. In general no employer can discriminate on hiring on the use of such legal products offsite and off the job.

In the end it all comes down to pre-call planning. Plan your responses to such questions and queries. Know your personal boundaries. Anticipate in your mind how far you will go or not go get that job. In the end all the employer needs to know is that you will do the job well, in an efficient and profitable manner and will be an asset to the firm or organization

Understanding what makes you tick in the form of personality preferences can really boost your self awareness and make it easier for you to communicate with others, particularly during a job interview.

Here are 3 tips to help your performance during the job interview, once you are aware of your personality type:

1. If you enjoy talking and meeting new people, then you’re probably more of an extravert. This means you’ll have no problem chatting about yourself during a job interview. However, the danger with extraverts is they don’t know when to stop talking. They have a natural tendency to talk more than they listen. They rarely pause for reflection and are constantly thinking of the next thing they want to say. Extraverts need to listen more carefully, particularly to the interviewer’s questions, if not there’s a good possibility they will mishear and go on to provide the answer to a totally different question.

2. If you prefer to spend time alone with your thoughts and ideas and don’t particularly enjoy meeting new people or talking about yourself, then you could be more of an introvert. During job interviews introverts sometimes find it difficult to open up and talk about themselves. They are good listeners and they will take time to understand the interviewer’s question, however, introverts can spend too much time reflecting on their answer. If the recruiter is looking for someone who can ’think on their feet’ this delay in answering might not work in their favor.

3. No matter if you are an extravert or introvert, there is no right or wrong way to be, all the personality types are equal. What is important is that you understand yourself and your behavior and this will boost your self-awareness and confidence… even in job interviews.

Immediately upon graduation, most college students start filling in job applications in hopes of securing a job interview. Prior to this, these graduates need to have an impressive graduate resume. Resume writing is an art that is best left to professional resume writers that specialize in graduate and entry level resumes. A good cover letter and an impressive resume is the first step towards being granted a job interview.

Now that you have secured an interview, you need to prepare for the tough questions that lie behind the employers’ door. The majority of people considers the expected questions and prepare for these. Many rehearse the answers so that they sound confident while answering them. Practicing responses in advance keeps a check on nervousness, and you sound professional and confident. However, with the job market so competitive and so many applicants applying for the same job, employers have come up with a way to weed out applicants and let the cream rise to the top. Employers will ask questions that are difficult, make your pulse race and be tough to answer.

Tough Questions You Can Expect
Let us take a closer look at some of the tough questions you may be asked and what a likely response could be:

•    You have no experience. Why should I consider you? – You need to be persuasive. Mention your ability to overcome deficiencies. Also, mention how you increased your knowledge through education, internships and summer jobs. Perhaps explain how your ability to master new technology made your colleagues turn to you for advice. Detail how your budding management skills would have a positive impact on the organization.

•    How did you resolve a conflict, if you had any, with your professor or last employer? – You need to accept that you had disagreements with your professors or past employers that required resolution. Give specific examples of how you coped and resolved the issue without being judgmental of your professor or previous employer. To answer this question correctly, you need to show that you are able to see the other persons view in the dispute, consider all options and then act rationally. That is what the employer is looking for. The employer really does not care who was right or wrong but what is important is how you handled yourself and the situation.

•    How would your professors (or last employer) describe you? – Explain that all would agree that you were a very energetic person who always accomplished whatever task was at hand. You were dependable, creative and possessed a keen eye to apply your knowledge in a very practical sense. Inform the interviewer that you have references for his consideration to backup your comments.

•    In your opinion, what are the qualities of a successful manager? – Be brief, clear and meaningful with your answer – as this is a true quality of an excellent manager. Some qualities you could mention are collaborative leadership, visionary planning, understanding the corporate objectives. Also, highlight how to interpret these to increase revenues and service the clientele. You can finish your response by giving an example of a person you consider to be a true leader.

•    What is your greatest weakness? – Everyone has one so never answer this question in a lame manner. Be precise and confident in expressing to the employer what you feel your greatest weakness is. Then immediately explain how your main achievement has been to recognize your greatest weakness and work on overcoming the issue.

If you really want your interview to stand out and surpass the competition, and be able to talk about yourself with ease and confidence, you need to prepare. You may have the best education and a stellar resume, but chances are the other applicants can say the same thing. Knowing how to answer, when asked about you, may make the difference between getting the job and looking for different employment opportunities. These are the hard questions that will likely determine whether you are the best fit for the company’s needs.

 

Practice how you will answer the question. Better yet, enlist the help of a friend or family member who will objectively critique your response. If you are adequately prepared, you will be able to answer the question with confidence and professionalism.

 

Job interview success                                 

You know that your response to the question “tell me about yourself” may be what sets you apart from the competition and garners you the position. But, what do you say? How to you ensure job interview success?

 

Here are a few key points to consider:

 

Be concise
Don’t ramble on
Pick what is likely to be most relevant
Be personable

 

Before the interview, when you are practicing, it’s a good idea to write down what you want to say about yourself. Be as concise as possible and figure out how to say the same thing in fewer words, if necessary. Pick items about yourself that will likely be of interest to the interviewer and be relevant to the position. For example, he/she probably doesn’t want to hear all about your childhood. However, if you are applying for a job at a daycare, and you are the oldest of 10 kids, it might be important information. You know what it’s like to work with kids. After all, you helped raise your siblings.                                          

 

When asked about themselves, many people take a more clinical approach. Don’t. Let your personality shine through and don’t be afraid to be yourself. In fact, your personality may be the determining factor in deciding whether you are a good fit for their organization.

Probably the most dreaded part of every job application is the interview. To feel butterflies in your stomach is actually common whenever you are headed for an interview, but this is something you must get over with. People think of job interviews as “grilling sessions”. In reality, interviews are just like any other getting-to-know-you conversation. It’s just that your answers determine if you get that job you’re applying for. So make sure you give them what they are looking for.

Here are some kinds of questions you should prepare for in a job interview:

1. The “Tell us a little more about yourself” question

Basically the interviewer wants to know about your capacities, so better tell him or her about your strengths and skills.

2. Closed questions

These are questions answerable by “yes” or “no”. You are also required to show technical expertise for them to assess.

3. The “What if…” questions

Hypothetical questions, as they are more properly known, test your quick wit and your ability to decide on things right on the dot.

4. Leading questions

A lot of applicants fail miserably when answering this kind of question, for this is structured to be more like a “yes” or “no” question. Examples of this question begin with the phrases “Do you have the ability to….” and “Are you capable enough to…” Respond to this question by citing some examples on how you would demonstrate your skills. Also, try to say something about your goal plan once you get the job.

5. Multi-barreled questions

These are a string of questions that lead to the same topic, and they tend to get confusing. Feel free to ask your interviewer to repeat the questions, or at least rephrase them to give you a clearer picture of his or her inquiry. Some interviewers use multi-barreled questions to check your logical reasoning.

6. Behavioral questions

Try to recall some important experiences that made you a better person in terms of skills and social development. This allows the employer to evaluate how you would deal with different situations once you become part of the company.

The bottom line is, try your best to be straight and direct. Avoid using too many adjectives. Just say what’s on your mind. After all, they are just asking questions. You provide the answers.

10 Important Job Interview Questions

With the current state of economic affairs in the United States and other countries being what they are, jobs are hard to come by.  If you are fortunate enough to be granted a job interview, don’t arrive unprepared.  There are many aspects to interview preparation, but an area often overlooked is interview questioning.  This particular part of an interview is twofold.  You must anticipate questions a hiring manager or recruiter might ask you as well as have questions you should ask.

To better prepare answers and questions for your interview, it is best to evaluate the company, the position, the responsibilities and your own interests.  Take into consideration the level of experience required.  Is it an entry level, mid-career, management or executive position?  Are you qualified for the position based on your experience or education?  The best way to determine what questions should be asked during your interview, is to identify information required to make your decision before accepting an offer.

Here are factors to consider when applying and interviewing for a new position:

Is the position in your field of expertise or industry? Are you changing industries?  If so, are your skills easily transferred into the new position? Is the location acceptable based on your current lifestyle, i.e., childcare or transportation? Is growth important to you and if so, is this a possibility for you with this company? What healthcare and financial benefits are crucial to you? Do you know the salary range for the position and does it meet your needs/requirements?

 

These are 5 examples of questions you may be asked in an interview:

Why are you leaving your current position?  Why did you leave your last position? Why should I hire you?  What makes you a better candidate compared to the others? How does your experience qualify you for our vacancy? What are your strengths and weaknesses? How well do you adapt to change?

 

Five interview questions for you to consider asking:

How did this position become available? What accomplishments would you like to see within this role? When would you ideally like to have the position filled? How long has this position been open? When can I expect to hear back from you?

 

There will always be a chance a recruiter or hiring manager will ask questions you’re not prepared to answer.  Don’t panic.  Remain calm and give your best possible answer.  Interviews can be nerve wrecking, but they don’t have to be disastrous.  Your appearance, grooming, attire, communication skills, eye contact and punctuality all factor in how you will be perceived.  Once in the actual interview, remain confident while conversing. 

Asking good interview questions shows preparation, interest in the position and/or company and that you’ve done your homework.  Usually you will be asked questions first and then given the opportunity to ask your own questions.  Never reply you don’t have any questions unless they were answered during the overview process.  Good luck and stay encouraged.

The first few minutes of a job interview are critically important for creating a good first impression. In fact, the first 30 seconds can make you or break you. Interviewers gather clues about you based on the way you look, how you shake hands, the eye contact you make and the first words that come out of your mouth. It pays to have a strategy for creating a great first impression every time you interview. Here are five tips for starting your interview off on the right foot.

1. Dress for the White House.

If you were invited to interview with the President of the United States in the Oval Office, there would be no question in your mind as to the level of professionalism you’d want to portray. Your grooming would be impeccable, your clothes spotless and lint free, your shoes in perfect condition. Yet job seekers often make the mistake of dressing too casual for job interviews. Never dress business casual for a job interview. Your suit should be classic in style, and conservative in color. Women, don’t wear low necklines or short skirts. Men, make sure your shirt is pressed to perfection and you tie isn’t too loud. Likewise, avoid all perfumes, scented deodorants and aftershave lotions. By the way you dress you announce to the interviewer how important you see him and his company.

2. Your handshake tells all.

Remember when deals were made on a handshake? That should give you an idea of how important society views the handshake. Your interviewer will read your character in your handshake. He’ll decide how honest you are by the way you shake his hand. A limp handshake reveals lack of interest. An aggressive handshake gives the impression of an overly eager or desperate candidate. A tip-of-the-fingers shake says lack of sincerity. Sweaty palms shows fear.

If handshaking isn’t part of your daily routine, chances are your handshake is less than what it ought to be. The best way to practice is to go to some kind of social event where you’ll have the opportunity to meet many new persons. Make it a game to shake as many hands as you can. See what you can read in others by the way they shake hands. Use the time to perfect your handshake so that your next interview you’ll stick out your hand with confidence.

3. Mirror your interviewer.

The quickest way to connect with your interviewer is to mirror their speaking style. If he speaks fast, you speak fast. If he has a slow manner of speaking, so do you. More importantly, you must match the level of detail that your interviewer speaks with. There are some people that communicate very directly. When asked a question, they answer in the shortest manner possible. Others are story tellers who embellish their language with plenty of details. You must listen very carefully to your interviewer to discover their level of detail in communicating. If you provide too much detail to one who is direct, you will overload them with what they see as extraneous information. They will quickly loose interest in you. On the other hand, if you are too direct in your answers to one who enjoys details they will suspect that you are trying to hide facts.

It’s true that you only have one opportunity to make a first impression. If you blow the first few minutes of your interview you may have lost your chance at a great job. Remember, you’ll most likely interview several people for each job opportunity. You’ll have to make a great first impression with each interviewer. Don’t get lax in your first-impression strategy. Use these tips for each and every person you interview with and you’ll be on your way to your next best career opportunity.
