3. Know a lot about the company and the position

This would be the result of having done your research. You should know as much as possible about the company, the job, and the people who will be interviewing you. It will help you with all the other steps.

4. Know the right questions to ask

Yes, you get to ask questions too, and they better be good ones. What are good questions? Questions that ask about their expectations of you and that show that you have their interest in mind. Avoid questions about pay, vacation days, and so on.

5. Be friendly and show enthusiasm

And make sure it’s real. They can tell a fake smile from a mile away. Just keep this thought in mind: The people you meet at the interview may well be your future colleagues, and you’re so excited at the prospect of working with them. What you do in the job interview is the preview. Play your cards right, and you’ll get invited back for the main act.

During the entire job application process, there are numerous stages a job applicant must successfully experience and a careful action should be taken in order to succeed in this process. There are some rules called do’s and don’ts for job applicants so as to help them considering the job application process. We will examine some important rules and recommendations regarding this point.

First thing to do before a job interview is to prepare for the interview session properly. For instance, a job applicant must work hard if s/he thinks his/her knowledge is not sufficient to experience a successful job interview. This work can be examined in two distinct parts. The first is technical work, which consists of the development of the theoretical and practical knowledge of a job applicant about a specific subject in which s/he is considered to be proficient. The second part to work on is nontechnical part;i. e, ethical, sociological topics. The process of preparing for this part is usually harder than that of the first part since the answers to nontechnical interview questions are mostly subjective and implicit. Therefore, a general understanding of the concept is needed.

In case the company prefers phone job interview to classical style, the job applicant must improve him/herself in oral communication skills so that a few minutes on the phone can be enough for the job applicant to express him/herself and answer the job interview questions successfully.

After the exact interview session date is determined, the job applicant should relax him/herself since nervous behaviour is the worst thing for a job applicant to experience during a job interview session. Some classical methods may be helpful in succeeding this. Mainly, expectations of the job applicant from the job interview is the most important factor in determining how relaxed the job applicant can be in the job interview session.

During the job interview, a friendly behaviour must be adopted and patience is also important. A job applicant must try to answer every job interview question in a logical way without giving up at any instant of the interview session. Another substantial subject to consider is the clothing of the job applicant during the interview session. Very marginal clothes are likely to create an undesired feeling about the job applicant, so such an action must not be taken.

A common mistake most job applicants make is to do nothing except for waiting for the evaluation result after the job interview. Company’s needs of job applicant knowledge must always be satisfied. The best method to execute this task is to write a “thank you” letter to the company staff after the job interview.

Consequently, there are numerous actions which can be taken for high quality job applications and job applicants must be very careful about attitudes which are not likely to be permitted in successful job interviews.

According to a recent survey of jobseekers, the typical person spends no more than 2 hours preparing for a job interview. Sure, in 2 hours the Titanic can sink, Hobbits can cross Middle Earth and Will Smith can probably save the world in one way or another, but can you equip yourself for job success? By following these simple tips you can optimize your preparation time.

 

Know your application. Having applied to a number of jobs, you may feel you could churn out application form answers backward whilst standing on your head, but never underestimate the importance of knowing your application inside out. Go over what you have said and commit it to memory, so if your interviewers refer to any part of your job application you will not be caught unaware. Go over your CV. Be prepared to discuss anything, especially aspects which may be perceived as weaknesses or lack of experience.

 

Know the job. In the same way, make sure you know exactly what jobs you are applying for.  Find a detailed job description: the company itself is likely to provide one, but if not you are bound to find something relevant by searching online. Think about every point of the description and how you specifically would be an asset in the role. Create a mental bank of examples which demonstrate your aptitude. You may find it useful to follow the SAS guideline:

how this action led to Success.

 

Research, research, research. Once you are sure you know your own application and the job description in encyclopaedic depth, it is time to focus on the company itself. Use any resources you have access to – the Internet, industry publications, even your local library – to garner an accurate impression of the ethos and aims of the business. It is useful to start with generalities, but make sure you focus on particular examples. What especially do you like about the company? What aspect of their business has impressed you? Anyone being interviewed wants a job, but these details will make you stand out. They will demonstrate to your potential employer that you have thought about the value of their company and how you particularly can be an asset to it.

 

Interrogate yourself. Before your interview, it is useful if you spend a few moments thinking about what you are likely to be asked when interviewing for jobs. Put yourself in the position of the employer – what would you want to know? There are some standard interview questions, many of which you can find listed online. Go through your responses, focusing on using positive language and consistently returning to the idea that not only will you gain from the employment, but that the company will benefit from you. Are you going for a job interview and you want to know what you should wear?  Well you have come to the right place because I will talk you through what you should and shouldn’t do to make the right impression.

Gone are the days when if you wore a suit then you knew you were dressed correctly for a job interview.  Although for certain jobs that is still the right thing to do, knowing what to wear for which type of job interview is the trick, so let’s take a look at the different situations you might be faced with.

Have you heard of the term ‘business smart’?  This is the term that is used when people expect you to look as though you are a professional in a fairly formal setting.  So if you are going for a job in an office or a bank then you will need to dress in ‘business smart’ style.  This does not mean wearing a suit, necessarily, but it is more about what you don’t wear.  For example jeans, trainers, t-shirts (especially with logos) are not appropriate for this category of interview wear.  Neither is lots of obvious piercings or tattoos.

You may feel that this is slightly discriminatory, but unfortunately there is no law that prevents discrimination against personal preference when it comes to these things, so if you really want the job, then your best bet is to cover up or remove the potentially offending tattoos and piercings.

For business smart, if you think about what you might be expected to wear to your children’s graduation day or your parents 50th wedding anniversary you can’t go far wrong.

But obviously there are other types of interviews where you are expected to be ‘different’ and to express your individuality.  This might be a job in the fashion industry or in the creative arts.  The important thing to remember here is that ‘different and creative’ does not mean scruffy and inappropriate.  So you have to find that fine line between dressing as if you were going out to a rave (unless that is where your job interview is!) and looking as though you have a bit of personality and character about you.

Just remember, clean, tidy and above all else something you are comfortable in.  There is nothing worse than looking the part in a brand new outfit when all you can think about is how uncomfortable or hot or overdressed, or underdressed you are.  If in doubt, play it safe.  And don’t be tempted to wear something outrageous just so that you will be remembered.  Believe me, if you are doing well at the interview, the interviewer will find a way to remember you and will take note.

“Tell me about yourself.”

It really isn’t a question. It’s an open-ended command. It’s an icebreaker for both interviewer and interviewee.

To put it another way, imagine you’re single, and imagine yourself at a cocktail party. And as you’re mingling, you meet someone attractive, and you say, “Tell me about yourself.”

And that person doesn’t shut up for the next fifteen minutes. Does that sound like fun for you? Probably not. You’re probably looking to catch the host’s eye for a conversational escape by minute five, and mentally crossing off a list of lame excuses to walk away by minute ten.

In other words, you’ve essentially stopped listening and you feel trapped. Do you want your job interviewer to have the same experience with you?

When you rehearse your answer to this question – that is, when you practice or role play with a friend, business coach, or loved one – here are a few tips for creating a great answer:

1. Don’t go for the throat.

Your resume got you in the door, and you’re going to be in the interviewee’s chair for another 30-60 minutes. Relax. Don’t try to tell the interviewer why you’re the right one for the job in that first answer. No interviewer ever hears the answer to “Tell me about yourself” and says, “Stop the interview! The job is yours!”

2. Keep it high-level.

The executive summary of your resume has the salient points of your career direction concisely packaged. Drawing from that language (though not parroting it) reinforces your personal marketing message, and connects the dots between you and the position you’re seeking.

3. Keep it focused.

Don’t talk about your early childhood unless it has a direct correlation to why you’re in the interviewee chair. And if it does have a direct correlation, get to the point fast.

4. Keep it brief.

You’d be surprised at how slow time moves in an interview. In a conversational tone and style, reading this article aloud would take less than three minutes, and it’s about 400 words. Three minutes is forever in an interview, especially at the start.

There’s a reason why “Tell me about yourself” is so commonly used, and it’s just to get the conversational ball rolling. Keep your answer simple, high-level, focused on no more than 2-3 salient points, conversational, and about half as long as this article.

When entering into an interview – whether you are the hiring manager or potential employee – it helps to know which questions should be asked.  As a hiring manager, you want to ensure that you know as much as possible about a potential employee before hiring them.  As the potential employee, you want to be prepared to answer everything that’s asked of you.  Below, find examples of the most common and useful types of questions asked during an interview.

Open Questions – These questions are open-ended.  Examples include “Tell us a little bit about yourself” and “What do you know about this job?”  By asking these questions, employers can get to know you and learn what you know about the company.  So, as a potential employee, make sure you do your research.  Say things about yourself that are relevant to the company and make sure you know what they do on the job.

Hypothetical Questions – These types of questions are usually along the lines of “What would you do in a certain situation?”  By answering, a potential employee lets the hiring manager know how they handle problems, resolve conflicts, and how they will be able to work on the job.  Think through your answers carefully before answering.

Leading Questions – Leading questions are usually aimed at learning the employee’s specific skills.  A hiring manager may ask something like “Give me some examples of your communication skills.”  As a potential employee, make sure to give solid examples.

Behavioral Questions – These questions help the hiring manager learn about a potential employee’s personality and abilities.  The manager may ask about a problem that the employee has solved in the past.  The employee should be able to explain the situation, tasks they had to handle, actions they took, and the result.

Closed Questions – These types of questions are used for clarity.  They may address a potential employee’s previous experience, technical skills, or abilities.  Oftentimes, these can be answered with a “yes” or “no.”

As a hiring manager, think about what you want to learn from potential employees and use a combination of the above question types when interviewing.  As a potential employee, make sure you are prepared to answer every type of question.  Take the time to review your skills and learn about the company before going into an interview.  Preparation is key to making a good first impression.
